Genting Casino, one of the largest poker-based casinos in the UK that once attracted numerous casino players from Scotland and England, wraps up its operations from immediate effect.
The casino firm decided to cease all the live poker activities in the UK. It is gearing to wrap up three of its outlets and shutting down 29 sites leading to job losses. The gambling firm has written to its workers about the job losses since the company has occured loss due to Coronavirus lockdown. This pandemic has made them shut their online sites too.
The three casinos based in Bristol, Torquay, and Margate will get closed permanently, and an undisclosed number of jobs will be lost. It includes all the 32 venues of the Genting Casino business.
Insight into the News of Closure of Poker Operations
A Poker news site based in the UK stated, “Genting Casino has wrapped up their total poker operations and has also put an end to the in-casino poker games. It has ended the whole ‘The Genting Poker Series’ also.”
Genting Casino has already named the three places where it will close its live poker activities, and here their workers are represented by the GMB, which is the union for hospitality and leisure workers. The warning to close these three Genting Casinos is just a start for the nation’s hospitality and leisure sector, which is now at its breaking point due to Coronavirus.
Another news agency of the UK stated, “It was rumored that Genting Casino would not be opening its poker operations for the public before an anonymous employee gave an eye-opener statement. The employee working in the Birmingham cardroom told the news site that Genting Casino is ceasing all its operations related to living poker in the UK.”
A few sources claimed that Genting Resorts World Casino in Birmingham would lose 98 employees. Almost 20 to 50 jobs will be lost at every Genting Casino around the United Kingdom. Even some news forms are making rounds on the social media pages of the Genting Casino employees too.
Other places where the Genting Casino will remain open will be Plymouth, but still, it is also expecting job cuts. Workers at this casino are on the Furlough that falls under the Government’s Job Retention Scheme. The GMB unions are hoping that the numbers of employees that will be laid down from the sites and in-house casinos will double in the coming days.
British Poker Facing Uncertain Times
British Poker, as per the reports, is facing a tough time because of the COVID-19 lockdown. The casino industry has been hit hard due to a lack of customers. The financial stability is impacted greatly. But, the casino named Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham not only relied on the casino profit, but they were backed financially by the Rob Yong and aligned with the online poker site named ‘Partypoker.’ The firm told the Dusk Till Dawn Casino employees that their jobs are safe, and they were paid in full too. Even behind the scene, things were well looked at by the progressive casino owner.
But, this was not the scene with the Genting Casino as it has to lay down its employees across its casinos in the UK. Moreover, one of the other popular poker casinos in the UK ‘Grosvenor Casino’ has furloughed 7,000 staff. Genting Casino is already consulting with the GMB Unions about the potential reduction in the headcount of the casino employees. But, workers at their casino sites have informed about this proposal by the Chief Executive Paul Willcock through a letter.
In his letter, the Genting Casino Chief Executive Paul Willcock stated, “The COVID-19 Pandemic has caused an unprecedented challenge of the poker casino. He said this has created a huge financial impact on the casino’s business and has made the future uncertain. So, to ensure survival, the company has to make this difficult decision.”
But, according to the GMB Union South West regional organizer Matt Roberts, “GMB will explore every poker avenue with Genting Casino and will try its best to keep the employee’s jobs, no matter how hopeless the situation gets.”
The Government of the UK has to retain the hospitality and leisure industry of the country by taking some concrete measures. The government must help the leisure sector by providing financial support if it wants to change the face of the casino industry in the country. If the UK Government does not intervene now, then the public will have little hospitality and leisure business to enjoy or go back to. Now, the employees working at Genting Casino’s brick and mortar stores and associated with online sites are looking forward to new hiring.
